Tanzania is extraordinarily diverse, with some 120 ethnic groups, yet unusually cohesive, bound together by the widespread use of Swahili, the national language, alongside English.
Religious life is roughly balanced between Christianity and Islam — the latter dominant on the semi-autonomous islands of Zanzibar — alongside traditional beliefs, generally coexisting peacefully.
Tanzania has a very young, fast-growing population and improving but still modest literacy and incomes, with a strong national unity forged since independence.
