The third Grand Central was built as passenger traffic outgrew the old station. The board of the New York Central allocated $35 million to build what would be the biggest train station in the world at the time. At the same time work began on electrifying the lines into the terminal. The new terminal with two levels of tracks was completed on February 2, 1913.
