Uruguayans are overwhelmingly of European descent, mainly Spanish and Italian, with small Afro-Uruguayan and other minorities. Spanish is the official language.
Uruguay is the most secular country in Latin America; though historically Roman Catholic, a large share of the population is non-religious.
Uruguay has very high literacy, strong healthcare, and among the highest living standards in the region, with a stable democracy and a small, aging, highly urban population centered on Montevideo.
