Cameroon is extraordinarily diverse, with some 250 ethnic groups and a colonial legacy that left it split between French- and English-speaking regions — both languages are official — a divide now driving conflict.

Religious life includes Christianity (the majority), Islam (strong in the north), and traditional beliefs.
