Architecture
The Middle Ages was a time of rapid growth in public and private building. Castles and churches were the two structures built in great numbers during this era. In the 11th and 12th centuries, church architecture was of the romanesque type. These churches featured large rounded stone roofs.
In the 13th century, the Gothic style of cathedral architecture arose. The Gothic Churches were characterized by their flying buttress vaulted roofs soaring skyward to the heavens.
