Prague Ruzyne International Airport
Construction of the Praha- Ruzyne airport began in 1929, and it was inaugurated in 1937. Its terminal was awarded a gold medal at the International Exposition of Arts and Technology in Paris in this same year. All civil operations were closed down with the onset of World War II, and the site was taken over by the German Luftwaffe. In 1946, however, Czechoslovak Airlines recommenced regular civil air transport. The necessary modifications to handle jet liners and an extension to the runway were added between 1957 and 1963. Air traffic became sluggish in the early 1980s, but by 1992 the terminal had been reconstructed and a new western gallery added. In 1994 2.7 million passengers and 16,000 tons of freight had passed through this airport. Plans for a new terminal and additional runways should be realized by 1997.
Prague International Airport is currently operational 24 hours a day and it has three runways. In 1995 annual air traffic reached 3.16 million passengers and 18,000 tons of freight. The new and old terminals together are expected to have the capacity to handle 5.3 million passengers.
