Clara Barton Organizes the Red Cross

Clara Barton, who had been the leading force in organizing woman nurses during the Civil War, organized the American Branch of the International Red Cross. She became its first President, a position she held until 1901. She was essential in gaining support for the ratification of the Geneva Treaty of 1882.
