First Women's Suffrage Bill Introduced

In 1868, the first Women's suffrage bill was introduced in Congress. This came in the aftermath of a stinging defeat for the Women's suffrage movement with the passage of the 14th and 15th amendments granting Blacks the right to vote and attempting to assure them equality. The Women's movements leaders had always considered Black suffrage and women's suffrage as parallel movements. Thus, when suffrage was granted to Blacks, while the rights of women were ignored, women felt a strong sense of betrayal.
