Parisian-born Gauguin was originally trained as a stockbroker but his love for painting eventually superseded even his obligations to his family. (He left his wife and children to pursue his art.) Gauguin developed his own style of painting called 'synthesism', based on his rejection of modern cultures and preference for places such as Tahiti, Martinique, and the Marquesas Islands. Viewed as a post-Impressionist, Gauguin's work has served to exert considerable influence on all those artists who came after him. |
