Nancy Pelosi Becomes Speaker

Representative Nancy Pelosi of California was elected Speaker of the House on January 3, 2019. Pelosi regained the speakership thanks to a democratic victory in the 2018 midterm elections. She became the first speaker in 60 years to recover the speakership after losing it.

On January 3rd on at noon, the House of Representatives was called into session. The House was full of little children as children and grandchildren of Members filled the chamber.

Representative Hakeem Jeffries Democrat of New York nominated Representative Nancy Pelosi to become the Speaker of the House. Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming nominated Representative Kevin McCarthy. There then followed a voice vote where each of the members was called when the vote was over Pelosi had received 220 votes and McCarthy received 192. Pelosi had become the first Speaker in 60 years to reclaim the chair after his or her party had lost power.
A few minutes later McCarthy stated:

“To the speaker of the House, Ms. Pelosi,” he said, “I extend to you the gavel.” Pelosi then invited all of her grandchildren and any other children in the chamber to join her on the podium as she took the oath of office.
