On April 20, 1999, two high school students massacred their fellow students at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado. Their initial goal was to plant bombs in the cafeteria and then kill the survivors. The two students placed the bombs in the cafeteria. They failed to entirely go off the two started firing, shooting first Rachel Scott and Richard Castaido. The two then began firing at any students they could see.
They then headed to the library, where there were 52 students, two teachers, and two librarians. They wounded or killed many of those in the library. The killers then went back to the cafeteria. Finally, as police gather around the school, the two committed suicide. The motives of the two perpetrators have never been truly determined. It seemed the two who had few friends wanted to go down in history for perpetrating one of the biggest massacres in US history.
The killings at Columbine were the most significant school shooting to date.
The Columbine school shootings sparked a national debate on both on gun control, school safety as well as video games.
