The Southwestern part of Missouri is dominated by the Ozark Mountains. The Ozarks are a series of low mountain peaks, reaching 1,500 feet. The Mississippi River forms the eastern boundary of the state. The Missouri River forms 250 miles of the western boundary of the state, and then flows eastward crossing Missouri and joining the Mississippi.

1735 Settlers from Illinois establish the first settlement in Missouri Sainte

1803 As part of the Louisiana Purchase Missouri become an American territory. 1821 Missouri is admitted to the Union as the 24th state.
1858 Missouri slave Dredd Scott is denied freedom in the Supreme Court decision that bears his name.
1861 A number of battles took place across Missouri that resulted in Union
dominance of the state. Captain Nathaniel Lyon led Union forces.
1882 Jesse James the infamous bank robber was killed in St Joseph.
1965 The Gateway Arch commemorating Missouri as the gateway to the west is

1) George Washington Carver National Monument
This site which was the boyhood home of George Washington Carver. The monument includes a visitors center that will tell story of the Carver’s life.
2) Harry S. Truman National Historic Site
This site was the home of President Truman and his wife from the time they were married until his death in 1972 and hers in 1982. The Trumans are buried in the courtyard of Truman library nearby.
3) Jefferson National Expansion Memorial
The center point of this park is the Gateway Arch which rises 630 feet and commemorates Americas westward settlement. The park celebrates the life of President Jefferson who spearheaded the Louisiana purchase from France.
4) Wilson Creek National Battlefield
On August 10 1861 a battle was fought between Union and Confederate forces for control of the territory. The visitors center here tells the story of this battle.
