The English Arrive at Jamestown
Jamestown is on the land of the Pamukey, (a group within the Powhatan confederacy). The leader was Wahunsonacok, who was simply called "Powhatan" by the English. The Indians provided assistance to the English, who in return demanded the submission of the Indians to English rule. Two years later, John Smith, the leader of the settlement, was captured by the Indians. Tradition has it that Powhatan's daughter interceded on behalf of Smith, who was to be executed. He was set free.
