In 1944, Roosevelt had no need to state whether he would run again.  As long as the war continued, it was clear Roosevelt would see it through. Through- out the campaign there were rumors Roosevelt's health was failing, rumors  he denied.  In late July, Roosevelt went on an inspection tour of the west coast and Hawaii. There he attempted to resolve the differences between MacArthur and Nimitz.

The major surprise of the 1944 campaign was Roosevelt's choice for Vice Presidential candidate.  He chose  Senator Harry Truman, who had made his name as the head of the Senate Select Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program.
