Nazi Field Marshal Hermann Goering was a decorated World War I pilot. He joined the Nazi Party in 1922, was elected to the Reichstag in 1928 and became its President in 1932.
After the Nazis' rise to power in 1933, he became second only to Hitler in the Nazi heirachy and was responsible for creating the Gestapo.
His main role was as head of the German Air Force. Beginning in 1943 with the successful Allied bombing of Germany, Goering lost popularity and power. He was tried and convicted in Nuremberg, but committed suicide before being hung.
