Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr was born on April 16, 1947 in New York City. From a young age he was tall. He was a star in high school leading his high school team Power Memorial Academy to three straight championships. He played baskeball in college for UCLA and led his team to three championships. In the summer of 1968 he converted to Islam and changed his name.

After college Jabbar was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks for whom he played from 1969-1974. From 1975- 1989 he played for the Las Angeles Lakers. Throughout his carreer he was one of the leagues leading scorers. When he retired he held the record for the most games played, the most points scored (38,387) and the most field goals made (15,837)
