Chaim Weizmann

Israeli statesman Chaim Weizmann was born in Russia. He studied at the University of Freiburg, where he received a PhD in chemistry in 1900. In 1904 he moved to Great Britain. He became the leader of British Zionist movement. During World War I, Weizmann was the director of the Admiralty Labs, where he made important contributions to the war effort. Weizmann was instrumental in convincing the British government to issue the Balfour Declaration.

He served as President of the World Zionist Organization from 1920 to 1931, and from 1935 to 1946. In 1947 and 1948, his meetings with Truman were instrumental in strengthening Truman's support for the creation of the state of Israel. Weizmann became Israel's first President following independence.
