Sergei Prokofiev was born in Sonstsovka Ukraine on April 27th 1891. He began playing and composing as a child. He moved to St Petersburg and enrolled in the St Petersburg Music Conservatory. After the Russian Revolution he decided to move to the US which he did in 1918

 

He became known as a brilliant pianist, conductor and composer. He wrote seven symphonies, violin and piano concerti, operas, a cantata, ballets and many works for chamber orchestras.

Among his best-loved works are Peter and the Wolf (1936), Romeo and Juliet (1938) and The Love for Three Oranges (1921).
