Fitzsimmons, Thomas (1741-1811) Signer of the Constitution: Fitzsimmons was born in Ireland in 1741, but later immigrated to the United States and became a merchant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During the Revolutionary War, he joined the patriot cause, and commanded a company of volunteers. The firm of George Meade & Co., of which Fitzsimmons was a member, gave £5,000 for supplies for the Continental Army. Fitzsimmons was a member of the Pennsylvania Assembly for many years; was a delegate to the Continental Congress from 1782 to 1783; and served as a delegate to the 1787 Convention in Philadelphia, in which he signed the US Constitution. After the Constitution was ratified, Fitzsimmons was elected to the US Congress, serving from 1789 to 1795. He was also president of the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and the North American Insurance Company. Fitzsimmons died in August, 1811, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
