Eustis, William (1753-1825) Secretary of War: After graduating from Harvard in 1772, he studied medicine and joined the Revolutionary army as a regimental surgeon, serving as such and as a hospital surgeon throughout the war. After the end of the Revolutionary War, he set up a practice in Boston, and was a surgeon with the forces to put down Shays' Rebellion in 1786-87. Eustis was a member of the Massachusetts Legislature from 1788 to 1794, and was councilor under Governor Sullivan for two years. In 1801, he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democratic-Republican, a position he maintained until 1805. In 1807, he was appointed Secretary of War, which he remained until 1813. The next year, Eustis became Minister to Holland, until 1818. After he returned to the United States, he was elected to Congress to fill a vacant seat, serving from 1820 to 1823. In 1823, he was elected Governor of Massachusetts, a position he retained until his death on June 10, 1753, in Boston.
