Duval, Gabriel (1752-1844) Associate Justice of the Supreme Court: Born in Prince George County, Maryland, on December 6, 1752, Duval studied law, was admitted to the bar and served as a clerk of the Maryland legislature before the Declaration of Independence. After the Revolutionary War, he was elected to Congress, serving from 1794 to 1796. He resigned from Congress to take a position as a justice of the Maryland Supreme Court. In December of 1802, Duval was appointed comptroller of the currency until 1811, when he was appointed to the US Supreme Court. Duval was forced to resign from the Supreme Court because of his deafness.
