Hannah Van Buren died almost two decades before her husband Martin assumed the Presidency in 1837. Theirs was a loving marriage which produced four children. It is known that she was extremely religious and devoted to charitable works for the poor. She died of apparent tuberculosis and Van Buren did not remarry. Van Buren maintained close relationships with his children throughout his life. His daughter in-law, Angelica Singleton, acted as his White House hostess. She was married to the Van Burens' eldest son, Abraham and was also a relative of former First Lady, Dolly Madison
