The President spent the first part of the morning receiving his daily briefings and meeting with his senior advisors.

At 10:45 the President and the Vice President made public remarks establishing a task force. The purpose of the task force will be to find ways to strenghten Americas Middle Class. The President stated at the ceremony "The strength of our economy can be measured by the strength of our middle class. That is why I have signed a memorandum to create the Task Force on Middle-Class Working Families ñ and why I have asked my Vice President to lead it. This is a difficult moment. But I believe, if we act boldly and swiftly, it can be an American moment - when we work through our differences and overcome our divisions to face this crisis."
The purpose of the commission according to the President:
Expanding education and lifelong training opportunities
Improving work and family balance
Restoring labor standards, including workplace safety
Helping to protect middle-class and working-family incomes
Protecting retirement security
The President spoke on phone with the Chinese President Hu Jinato. The President and China's President spoke about developing a more constructive US-China relationship.
1:45PM THE PRESIDENT met with senior enlisted officials of the U. S. Armed Forces. This was clearly part of his efforts to build a strong relationship with the US military.
The President also issued three executive orders two of which strengthen workers rigths. The first requires government contractors to insure that all workers are informed of their union rights. The second requires federal service contractors to keep employees from the previous contract and the third limits reimbursments on non direct expenses in federal contracts, thus lowering their costs.
