Cadmus Marcellus Wilcox was born in Wayne County, North Carolina, on May 29, 1824. He was graduated from West Point in 1846, and fought in the Mexican War. In the 1850s, he served at frontier posts, taught at West Point and wrote a text on rifle practice. In July of 1861, Wilcox joined the Confederate service, and promoted to brigadier general as of October 21, 1861. He led troops at Seven Pines; and in the Seven Days', Second Bull Run and Fredericksburg Campaigns. Wilcox served the Confederate cause most notably in the Chancellorsville Campaign, and later fought at Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Petersburg. He surrendered with the Army of Northern Virginia in April of 1865, and lived in Washington, D. C. after the Civil War. Wilcox was chief of the railroad division in the US Government Land Office from 1886 until his death on December 2, 1890, in Washington, D. C.
