Beverly Holcombe Robertson was born in Amelia County, Virginia, on June 5, 1827. He graduated from the US Military Academy in 1849, and served in the 2d Dragoons. Robertson was dismissed from the army in August of 1861, having been offered a captaincy in the Confederate armed forces. By the end of the year, he was part of the Confederate military. While his military career before the Civil War had been distinguishes, he faced many problems as a Confederate officer. Promoted to brigadier general on June 9, 1862, he led troops in the Shenandoah Valley and Second Bull Run Campaigns. He performed poorly at Cedar Mountain, and Maj. Gen. "Stonewall" Jackson wanted Robertson to be transferred. After the transfer was effected, Robertson's leadership improved. Nevertheless, he and his troops were routed at the Battle of Brandy Station. After failing to follow orders in the Gettysburg Campaign, Robertson was transferred again, to South Carolina. After commanding the state's 2d Military District, he helped defend Charleston from Union attack, and surrendered a month later. After the Civil War, Robertson moved to Washington, D.C., and worked as an insurance broker. He died there, on November 12, 1910. |
