BIOGRAPHY
John Creed Moore was born on February 28, 1824, in Hawkins County, Tennessee. He studied at Emory and Henry College in Virginia, then attended the US Military Academy at West Point. Graduating in 1849, he served in the US Army for six years, then resigned in 1855 to teach at Shelby College, in Kentucky. In 1861, Moore went to Texas and raised the 2d Texas Infantry for the Confederacy. He served in the Battles of Shiloh, Iuka, and Corinth; and was promoted to brigadier general on May 26, 1862. Captured in the surrender of Vicksburg, he was exchanged in September of 1863. When Moore fought in the Battle of Lookout Mountain, Union Lt. Gen. U. S. Grant accused him and others of having fought in violation of their release agreement. The argument was not settled until January of 1876, when Moore and his colleagues were shown to be innocent of Grant's charges. Moore was transferred from Lookout Mountain to the defenses at Mobile, Alabama. This was to be his last assignment, since Moore resigned on February 3, 1864, for reasons that are not clear to historians. Moore is sometimes confused with Lt. Col. John C. Moore of the arsenal at Selma, Alabama, because of an indexing error in the "Official Record." After the Civil War, Moore lived in Texas, working as a teacher and freelance writer. He died in Osage, Texas, on December 31, 1910.
